NAHSMS 2005 Winter Rally

I was very pleased with the turnout for the contest. The rocks were great during the peak. I quadrupled my score from the Spring contest. One thing I would like to see is the 144 MHz QSO count as more due to more operators on 6 meters. The Q's are easier to make than on 2 meters. All in all it was a blast. I took a week off from work to participate. Also I got to work 3 new grids on 2 meters. Al XE2AT went to the intersection of DL81, 82,91 and 92 to give me the 3 new ones on the last day. Rocks were great during that timeframe. I look forward to next year as I may work 6 meters QRP.- KM5ES

Overall activity seemed up, and being unassisted, I was glad to see people monitoring the calling freqs more than in the past. I didn't see near as many random on 2m but got a couple and moved (or got moved) by 11 others from 6m to 2m. I got to run 6m mobile in EM52 and EM43 some with a little luck. I had planned work related overnight/early AM try from EM44 but that fell through. All in all good activity. Did try one 2m long haul sked but zip on it. Thanks to Joe it is easy to pull the WSJT.LOG into the spreadsheet, sort and tally up. Lots of new ones for Random QSO Award.- N5SIX

Murphy hit early in 1st day of contest. Lost my Dell 2 GHz machine with failure of the Chip Cooler. Swapped to 266 MHz Lap top running Version 3.8.1 for FIRST TIME EVER!!! After figuring out the laptop and fighting with the "touch pad thing" (missed the mouse big time) we finally got running. All my two meter contacts were qsy from six meters. Only heard one CQ on 144.140! Contacts were just as easy on two meters but no activity unassisted which was disappointing.- WA5UFH

The low speed Geminids did not provide many bursts on 222 and only gave me two QSOs. Tried many times with KE7NR on 222 with no luck. Prefer to keep a single calling frequency for all modes (JT6M, 441A) as us gents in the “boonies” rarely have someone looking our way. I think 2 meters should get 3 points instead of one as pings are shorter and fewer than on 6. Also increase 222 from 3 to 6 pts. If anyone can make one on 432 good luck to them - give 'em 10 pts for a QSO. T'was a lot of fun for sure! - W5UWB

Had a great time, but really didn't get a chance to work any late evening, and had the chance to work once in the morning time. Thank you to all stations I worked, and the ones who made an effort to work me. - N5BO

I enjoyed the rally, conditions were either very good or very bad here. Heard quite a few stations on one real good ping never to be heard again, either way it was a lot of fun and also managed to pick up grid #100 on WSJT. - K4YMQ

Had a lot of fun with the contest this year. I missed the first weekend and I wasn't intending to do more than hand out a few points but the rocks were so good on Monday night that I ended up taking Tuesday and Wednesday off to keep at it. Got a little slower after that and I started seeing the same couple of calls over and over the rest of the week, probably should have switched to assisted but I wanted to see what I could do without PJ. - KI0LE

Had some fun! Just not a lot of action out west here in the mornings. - KU7Z

I noticed the rules exclude adjacent grids for QSO points. I wonder if that should be eliminated, since many of us have gotten good at using backscatter techniques. If that rule is in place to prevent non-meteor propagation QSOs, remember JT6M and Es are very easy to make when the band is open on 6 meters. I think most of us are honest enough to only count true meteor type contacts. Because of the adjacent grid rule, I had to delete some QSOs for close in grids, even though I only used backscatter pings. I’d like to see 2 meter and 222 QSOs to have progressively higher qso scoring, because they are harder to make than 6 meters. Maybe next time I’ll take the rover out for a spin. I’m not sure how productive I’d be, without the aid of Ping Jockey. It might be worth a try. I had a blast, and I hope we can continue with the contest! - K4AL

Operating unassisted sure can get lonely, but it feels good to make QSOs away from the Ping Jockey page. All of my contacts were made through my remote controlled station over the Internet. Contacts on two meters are much harder to make than on six meters, so more points should be awarded for a two meter QSO. If a six meter QSO is worth one point, a two meter QSO should be worth at least 2 or 3 points. - AJ6T
